Uncle Lee Cho Poon

From a street entertainer to a caregiver for other seniors, Uncle Lee's wish is to make others happy.

The company and support provided by Lions Befrienders allowed Uncle Lee to regain his confidence to step out to care for others.

Uncle Lee was a cheerful and entertaining street entertainer with his father. Although they put in long hours in the sun, Uncle Lee enjoyed making others happy through his singing and performances.

After his father passed on, he continued to perform with his uncle. When his uncle passed on as well, he had to deal with the pain that he was left without a kin. Due to his ailing health, he was forced to stop busking and turned to the public assistance scheme for support. From a street entertainer who spent all of his days bringing laughter to the community, he became an isolated senior who lived alone with no one to turn to. As time went by, he unknowingly distanced himself from the community and almost lost his cheery deposition. When the staff from Lion Befrienders first met him, he was withdrawn and socially isolated with little or near-complete lack of contact between him and the community.

Through Lion Befrienders, a programme supported by Community Chest, the staff and volunteers reached out to him regularly through befriending, activities and outings.

With their company and support, smiles and laughter slowly returned to his life. Finding solace among other seniors, Uncle Lee regained his confidence and even stepped up to open his doors to another senior, Uncle Chua and helped care for him.

When asked why he chooses to care for another senior, he says ‘to care is to make others happy and that is my wish.’ When he was young, he brought joy to people through his street performances. Now, he enjoys making others happy as a caregiver for fellow seniors.

With the passing of his first housemate, Uncle Lee welcomed another senior Uncle Neo to his home. Although Uncle Neo is a wheelchair user, Uncle Lee ensures that Uncle Neo continues to be part of the community by bringing him about for meals and walks. He wants to make sure that Uncle Neo does not go through what he had gone through before – to become socially withdrawn with no one to turn to.
